Is closed rhinoplasty more painful than open rhinoplasty?
The decision to undergo a rhinoplasty is not to be taken lightly. It is completely normal and expected to have various questions regarding the procedure. Many people considering the decision to undergo a rhinoplasty are excited for a new sense of confidence and security that comes with a new nose, but wonder how painful the procedure actually is. Almost all surgical procedures are associated with some level of discomfort. It’s important to choose a surgeon who makes your safety and comfort a priority.
Dr. Deepak Dugar has dedicated his entire surgical practice to his closed, Scarless Nose technique. This technique is less invasive than open rhinoplasty and all surgical maneuvers are done through incisions inside of the nostrils. His technique is less invasive than open rhinoplasty, and many of his patients report that they feel little to no pain at all. There is less surgical trauma inflicted during closed rhinoplasty and therefore it is less painful than open rhinoplasty. During open rhinoplasty, an incision is made on the base of the nose, seen below, in order to perform the surgery. People undergoing open rhinoplasty will experience more pain around the incision sites.
To make your recovery as smooth and comfortable as possible, Dr. Dugar does prescribe pain medication. Almost all of his patients, however, report only needing to take Tylenol throughout the first few days after surgery. After a few days, there should be little to no discomfort at all.
Congestion and pressure is to be expected throughout the first few days of recovery. All of Dr. Dugar’s detailed post-operative instructions have the purpose of lessening the amount of pain one would experience. Bruising and swelling is a very common outcome following rhinoplasty. However, Dr. Dugar’s pre and postoperative regimen lessen the intensity of both the bruising and swelling. Some of his patients never experience any bruising at all! These are just a few of the reasons why patients fly from all over the world to have their noses done by Dr. Dugar. Dr. Dugar chose to specialize in this procedure because it is less painful and invasive than open rhinoplasty.
