What is the Best Age to Get a Nose Job?

What is the best age to get a nose job? In fact, there is no perfect age for rhinoplasty surgery, also known as a nose job. On average, girls aged 15-16 years old and up are ideal candidates for rhinoplasty, with boys just a year or so after.

Why this age? The first reason is that the nose and rest of the body must be at physical maturity. On average, female noses reach this physical maturity around age 15. This means that the nose is no longer changing shape or size. If a nose that is still growing is operated on, it is possible that the initial post-surgery results are not permanent. It is equally important for the patient to be in good health so that their body can recover and heal properly from the surgery.

Additionally, it is important for the patient to have reached emotional maturity to be able to make the right decision for their body, surgery or not. It is important to understand the risks, benefits, and have realistic expectations for the results. Before taking any new patients, closed rhinoplasty surgeon Dr. Deepak Dugar thoroughly interviews possible candidates to make sure that they understand all aspects of a nose job, both physical and emotional. It is essential that the patient is old enough to want the procedure for the right reasons, can handle the recovery, and has realistic expectations. The outcomes of a nose job can never be 100% certain, so being realistic on both the risks and benefits is always essential for any procedure. Chasing perfection or someone else’s type of nose is not a good reason to consider a nose job.

It is also important for the patient to be in a time of their life where they have the proper recovery time. Casts typically stay on for a week and swelling will subside after about six weeks. However, caution must be exercised around the nose for at least the next 6 months to a year while the nose heals. Students who choose to get a nose job often have their surgery over the summer or winter break when they are not in school so that they have the proper time to rest and recover.

Remember, rhinoplasty procedures for the most part last a life time, and altering facial structure is a big, yet for the right candidates, rewarding decision!

At the end of the day the most important factors in any procedure are your overall health and goals. The best way to determine if, and when a nose job is right for you is in a consultation with a qualified surgeon. During a consultation, you and your surgeon should discuss why you want a nose job, your risks, and your personal benefits from the procedure. A good plastic surgeon will only take on a new patient if their services are absolutely right for their candidate. After all, a nose job is about you, how you want to look, and how you want to feel!
