Does Botox last longer the more you get it?

Thinking of getting Botox injections for your fine lines, but want to know if the effects last longer, the more you get botox injections? The short answer is; yes. The long answer is that the effects on wrinkles you see on your face, appear to be more effective the more frequently you get botox injections. This is because, the longer patients wait between botox sessions, the larger the amount of more facial muscle synapses your body will replenish over the longer period of time, causing more contractions and more wrinkles. With getting botox more often, you paralyze more facial muscles that cause wrinkles, and that up-keep makes wrinkles look less visible for longer.

This replenishment of the nerve endings growing back onto your face muscles where they once were paralyzed with botox, results in your facial muscles contracting again, and thus; wrinkles forming again. Understanding if Botox will last longer the more you get it, requires understanding how botox works on the body. Botox, or Botulinum toxin type A, is an FDA approved neurotoxin that works cosmetically as tiny injections to the muscles that are causing wrinkles, to stun the muscle and stop the nerve endings from contracting. This leaves the muscle with less mobility, and fewer synapses that create the intense movement in the face, or facial muscle contractions that over time leave creases in the skin, or fine lines. The nerve endings on the facial muscle that get paralyzed by the botox injections, over time grow new nerve endings on the muscle, creating muscle contractions that show the appearance of wrinkles once again.

When patients listen to the recommended three to four (3-4) months to wait between botox sessions with their doctor, they are limiting the time that their facial muscles have to regenerate more cells to contract the muscles again. It is beneficial to keep up on botox injections, while this can make the appearance of botox’s effects last longer, thus keeping your appearance youthful for longer.
