DIY Lip Plumper Recipes

The size and look of lips can be a source of either pride or insecurity for many people. Voluminous or pouty-looking lips have become a sought-after feature thanks to celebrities like Kylie Jenner, Kim Kardashian, as well as prominent social media influencers.

There are safe and doctor-approved procedures that can help achieve this desired look, whether it’s lip threading or botox injections. But at the moment, you may be more inclined to try natural solutions that can be easily done from the comfort of your own home.

Though these will not leave a permanent effect, the following homemade lip plumper recipes are straightforward and replicable.

A lip scrub plumper using olive oil and cinnamon

What you’ll need:

  • 1 tbsp. olive oil (stimulates blood flow)
  • 1 tbsp cinnamon powder (helps plump up lips)
  • 1 tbsp. sugar or salt
  • Mixing bowl
  • Empty lip balm jar (50 ml.)

How to make this lip plumper at home:

  1. Mix the cinnamon and olive oil together in a mixing bowl.
  2. Add sugar or salt
  3. Once well mixed, transfer the mixture into your empty lip balm jar.
  4. Apply to lips and massage lightly for about five to 10 minutes before rinsing.

A potent lip plumper

What you’ll need:

  • Lip balm
  • 1.5 tsp. cinnamon oil
  • 1.5 tsp. clove oil
  • 1.5 tsp. cayenne powder
  • Small pot
  • Heat resistant bowl
  • Empty lip balm jar (50 ml.)

How to make this lip plumper at home:

  1. Fill a small pot halfway with water. Place on a stove and wait for the water to start simmering. Don’t let it come to a rolling boil.
  2. Empty the entire lip balm in a heat resistant bowl. Place the bowl on top of the pot.
  3. Combine the rest of the ingredients into the heat resistant bowl.
  4. Stir until everything is mixed well. Turn off the stove.
  5. Pour the lip plumper mixture into your empty lip balm jar.
  6. Let it cool at room temperature or inside the refrigerator.

A lip gloss plumper

What you’ll need:

  • Clear lip gloss,
  • 3 to 6 drops of peppermint oil
  • A pinch of cayenne pepper powder

How to make this lip plumper at home:

  1. Open the lip gloss and directly add drops of peppermint oil.
  2. Follow up with the cayenne pepper powder.
  3. Mix well using the lip gloss wand before applying to your lips.

Cocoa butter and cinnamon plumper

What you’ll need:

  • 1 tbsp. cocoa butter
  • 1 tsp. olive oil
  • 5 drops of cinnamon essential oil
  • Small pot
  • Empty lip balm jar (50 ml.)

How to make this lip plumper at home:

  1. Set the stove to low heat, just enough to melt cocoa butter on a small pot.
  2. Add in olive oil and cinnamon essential oil with the melted butter. Start stirring.
  3. Once all the ingredients are combined well, kill the heat and transfer to an empty lip balm jar.

A few tips and reminders

While the effect of natural DIY lip plumpers can last several hours, there are simple steps to ensure your lips look their best all through the day — with or without plumping techniques.

  • Regular hydration

Avoiding dryness is key to making lips look and feel soft to the touch. There’s a good range of lip balms and hydrating formulas that can help you sufficiently hydrate and moisturize. From Drunk Elephant’s Lippe Balm to Lather’s Lip Conditioning Balm, prices can range from $11 to $22. But your lips aren’t the only ones that need regular hydration. Make sure to drink enough glasses of water everyday. Water intake is essential in maintaining skin elasticity and quality overall.

  • Exfoliation

Dead skin cells often make lips look dry and flaky. When light makes contact on these lips, they typically appear smaller and exude an unflattering look. One exfoliating method you can try is to combine a tiny amount of sugar and almond oil. Then, lightly apply the mixture to your lips using a soft toothbrush. After a few minutes, wash off any residue left and follow up with a lip treatment to hydrate and help your lips hold on to moisture for longer periods.
